Well, qbert. Further along these lines. I do have both the D300s and the ff D700, but the smaller cameras in the D5-series are easier to carry around when I go on a all-day photo-shoot normally lasting many hours. I get tired lugging the big ones around for more than 3 to 4 hours.
In my opinion, the sensor in the D5100 is one of the best Nikon has ever had in one of their cameras - except the ff sensor in the D3S, and I am sorry that they did not continue it.
It is a forgiving sensor where one can pull out a lot of details from shadow areas in a normally exposed shot, even slightly underexposed ones. Ideally I would wish for this 16.1Mp sensor from the D5100 to be inside the D5200 and the D5300, because I do not need 24Mp. This would be the ideal combo for me. 16.1 Mp sensor and the 39 AF-points of the D5300 would be just great. The rather slow 11-point AF of the D5100 presents a real limitation.
Anyway, nice to "chat" and swap experience. Ideally we should do this in the Forum, but ther is never anybody there...which I miss a lot.

When I first saw this shot I immediately recognized it to be your work and thought is was from the D5100 and 16-85. Its refreshing to see these smaller, lighter bodies being used and producing results like this. I have used the D5000 since it was first introduced, having missed the waist level finder from my film days, paired with the 18-105, which I love. No its not the sharpest and has some distortion and CA but nothing I cant deal with. The D90 is my lightweight now, and I was considering a 16-85 to pretty much leave on this body. Looking at this new kit lens, Im having second thoughts.

I have just had both camera and the lens for 1 day, so I could not say for sure how it behaves. Have just tested with a couple of hundred shots so far, and it looks really good - so far.
i am not sure, but seem to remember that my trusted 16-85mm VR has some sharper output. But then I have never had a sensor with 24Mp either, so it could be that.
But I can tell you, that it only took me 1 hour to get acquainted with both camera and lens. No problem at all. The D5300 is great compared to the D5100, better grip and LCD. Viewfinder as well. The 18-140mm VR is a bit on the heavy side for the D5300, which is a small camera, and the weight of the lens is not well balanced by the camera. But, it will be O.K. once I get used to it. But it's not a combo that you will hold in your right hand alone for long. The lens need support from your left hand.
